In one of the most privileged areas of Lisbon, stands the majestic Ajuda National Palace

A brief history

In one of the most privileged areas of Lisbon stands the majestic Ajuda National Palace, a testament to the grandeur and resilience of Portugal’s royal past. Construction of this building began in 1795, rising from the ashes of a former royal residence that was the victim of the 1755 earthquake that almost completely devastated the city of Lisbon. Ordered to be built by Queen Maria I, the palace was conceived as a symbol of the Portuguese spirit and soul and also as a kind of beacon or guide of hope for the entire nation.

The architectural masters behind this royal masterpiece were Francisco Xavier Fabri and José da Costa e Silva, two Portuguese architects who gave the palace a harmonious blend of neoclassical and baroque styles. Their attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence resulted in the completion of this architectural marvel in 1802.

For more than a century, the Ajuda National Palace was the official residence of the Portuguese royal family. Inside, many important decisions were made and a lot of history was made!
