unique gastronomic experience

Traditional Portuguese cuisine

Traditional Portuguese cuisine is a testimony to the country’s history and cultural heritage, offering a unique gastronomic experience. Among the must-try dishes is the iconic Bacalhau à Brás, a harmonious blend of cod, chips, onion and egg, all united in a symphony of flavours. This apparently simple dish embodies the essence of Portuguese comfort food, a dish that warms the soul and awakens the senses.

Another dish that uses cod as its main ingredient is codfish pataniscas. Pataniscas de bacalhau consist of shredded cod with onion and parsley, wrapped in a batter of eggs and flour, fried in oil to form a kind of cake.

Another very common dish is caldo verde, a traditional Portuguese soup that symbolises simplicity and flavour. It is made with cabbage, potatoes and chorizo as the main ingredients. It is common to eat this soup, along with grilled sardines, at the arraiais that take place throughout the month of June in Lisbon’s typical neighbourhoods.

Typical restaurant menus include bitoque, alheira, charcoal grills and bacalhau à Lagareiro, among others.
